As I type this, I am on a plane flying back to Austin from Denver, Colorado. If you have no idea what I am talking about or why I was in Colorado, then let me fill you in really quick. As many of you know, Kaci and I traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana last October to experience our first ever Supernatural convention (You can read all about it here!).
Well after that convention, we realized we had been missing out on this entire side of the fandom. We had gotten hooked very quickly on this entire convention thing. We needed to go to another one. So after checking the 2018 schedule, we narrowed it down to three potential options-Las Vegas, Denver and Jacksonville. All had their pros and cons, and if we could have, I can guarantee we probably would have gone to all three. But when it came down to it-Vegas, while nice because it was a four-day con, was way too close for us to plan appropriately, way too expensive and there wouldn’t be anyway Kace could get off work again so soon after her wedding and honeymoon; Jacksonville was in December so it would have given us almost an entire year to plan and save but we didn’t know who for sure was going yet, and I don’t think we could have waited that long, so Denver ended up being the final choice.
And after experiencing #SPNDEN, I think we made the right one. A couple months ago, we made the executive decision that while this was only our second con, it would be our last due to her new life as a married woman and me wanting to travel and really figure out what I am going to do with my life, so as a HUGE surprise to me Kace managed to score us gold passes for this convention, which meant we would get amazing seats, autographs from a total of 9 of the cast members, Jared and Jensen being exclusively for gold and silver only, free access to the Saturday Night Special, and an exclusive gold only panel on Sunday with Jared and Jensen.
If this was going to be our last con, then we were going to go all out for it. We bought the photo ops we really wanted (and even snagged a couple extras after our Misha and Mark one had to be credited), met some of the coolest people, signed up for karaoke and got picked (still reeling from that to be honest) and so much more. We both joined the Facebook page for the convention, met online friends in real life as well as met one of my inspirations for writing again, Lynn from Family Don’t End In Blood.
Comparing it to #SPNNOLA, #SPNDEN was a completely different experience for both of us. The first time around, we were simply going to get the photos and experience it, as well as exploring New Orleans because it was the first time we’d been there. This time, as much as I would have loved to explore Denver and Aurora, we simply just had way too much stuff to do all weekend. Friday was completely dedicated to Misha for Kace and while I didn’t have anything except autos at night, I spent the day either watching panels, taking photos, helping Lynn out at her booth and helping get some footage for a video Kace is working on. On top of that, we were working with about 4 hours of sleep, give or take, the Hyatt getting our hotel rooms mixed up and karaoke jitters. Saturday was photo ops back to back for us as well as autographs and panels. Being completely honest, Saturday was probably our most packed day in terms of photo ops but the least hectic in terms of everything else, yet we still managed to not eat until dinner time between the last panel and the Saturday Night Special. Sunday was J2 day and it was an emotional one as well as a mentally fulfilled one. We got to see the Gold panel, got our J2 ops as well as Alex’s, I was able to FINALLY get my tattoo written out and am currently planning where I want it and we ended the night with pizza with Amy (who I am going to meet up in September with!).
#SPNDEN was seriously the most life changing experiences for me, which will probably sound SO weird to people who just don’t get the fandom, the family. And anyone who’s not in the fandom probably won’t understand why this weekend, I thrived. I had some of the most fun I’ve had in a while. I met people from all walks of life, I got to live out my rock-star dream when Kaci, our new friend Amy and I got picked FIRST for Friday night Karaoke (where we most definitely rocked Bon Jovi), I found my passion for photography again (which had been hidden for oh so very long) and on top of that, I got to share two of my favorite photos of this weekend with the muses. I got to love on a cast that treats their fans like family, and in return they loved on us. I helped Kaci with some videography work that showed me a hidden hobby that I didn’t know I loved. The months leading up to this con and even during it, we kept saying “this is our last con, this is our last con. We went all out because of it,” but when it comes down to it. The emotions, the passion, the want to be surrounded by this amazing family almost always outweigh that. There is no plan for another #Supernaturalconvention anytime soon but honestly? If one just happens to fall in my lap, I wouldn’t say no. After all, we might not be hunting things and saving people, but this is the family business. [Taken from my Instagram caption]
I wish everyone who is a part of a fandom gets to feel the same love and support that my fandom has for me. I hope that your family is as crazy, thought provoking, passion-inspiring, creative, geeky, and amazing as mine. I hope that our craziness doesn’t make you think twice about joining in. I know that I will continue to make life changing decisions because even if I fall, the #SPNFamily will be there to pick me back up…
Until next time lovelies,
