"I hope the fathers and mothers of little girls will look at them and say 'yes, women can'." I last wrote about International Women's Day in 2019 - pre-covid, pre-life changes, pre-everything it feels like. I originally thought about this piece before I was going to bed last night, but I was too tired so I didn't think to write any of what was said in my head, and now I am regretting because sleepy-mik has the best thoughts.
I know one thing was certain though - I would not be the woman I am today without the oh so important women in my life now and those who came before me. I am part of such an intricate web of strong, resilient women, who have shaped me to being who I am. And it's not just my DNA who have molded me, but the women I surround myself with. I have some of the absolute best girl friends someone could ask for. Because of them I don't get shy when I am in love with something. I don't look away when a man meets my eye and tries to downplay my power. Because of them I don't care how I dance at a bar or a club or wherever when my favorite song comes on. Because of them I dress how I want, where I want. Because of them I am not shy to share my beliefs in fear of someone judging me, because those who love me don't. Because of them I am learning to fight for what I want and not to back down. So despite the absolute horror fest our world is right now, on this international women's day, make sure to take a little extra time and thank those special women in your life, because the world could use a little more love right now.
