10/1/2016

OCTOBER IS HERE! I REPEAT OCTOBER HAS ARRIVED!
If you cannot tell, October is by far my favorite month because it is officially fall and the best holiday ever is finally here. Halloween!
Halloween is my favorite holiday. Don't ask me why, it just is. Maybe because it is socially acceptable to dress up, or you get to get a ton of free candy or (now that I am of age and an adult) you can make those really crazy alcohol drinks for parties.
Seeing at this is my favorite month, I am going to attempt the dreaded 'Blogtober'. Well my version at least. My Blogtober goal is publish twice a week in October with all of them being Halloween themed (minus one).

My first post I thought I would keep it simple, and share with y'all my Top 10 Must Watch Halloween Movies. I am a big movie-watcher so it is important to me have an ample amount of good movies to watch during the Spookiest month of the year.
To all my fellow non-scary movie watchers, I am right there with you so this list will feature both non-scary and scary movies (as approved by Kaci). My big brother forced me to watch Chucky when I was little and I haven't been able to watch a scary movie since.
  1. Hocus Pocus (1993)-Ahhh the Sanderson sisters. They’ve put a spell on all of us. Easily one of my favorites because of the catchy songs. The movie follows teenager Max Dennison who just moved to Salem, Mass., as they explore an abandoned house with his sister Dani and their new friend, Allison. After dismissing a story Allison tells as superstitious, Max accidentally frees a coven of evil witches who used to live in the house. Now, with the help of a magical cat, the kids must steal the witches' book of spells to stop them from becoming immortal. Every time October rolls around, this movie is ready for play on my TV.
  2. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)- Tim Burton is a genius. No one can tell me otherwise when it comes to his animations. In this movie, the king of Halloween, Jack Skellington actually gets tired of Halloween (WHAT?!) and needs something else in his life. Enter the weird forest with oddly familiar shapes and of course Sally. After tumbling into Christmastown and deciding that he wanted to “steal” Christmas, it is downhill from there for Jack. Sally tries to make him see whats right in front of him, the townspeople take Christmas to a scary factor and the people of the world want nothing of what Jack is offering, even going as far as to blow him out of the sky. Thankfully, Jack realizes his mistake and rightfully places himself back on his throne of Halloween.
  3. Beetlejuice (1988)- Classic. And another Tim Burton favorite. Sure it has a kind of creepy dude but he makes the whole movie with his creepiness and his classic black and white suit. After Barbara and Adam Maitland die in a car accident, they find themselves stuck haunting their country residence, unable to leave the house. When the unbearable Deetzes and teen daughter Lydia buy the home, the Maitlands attempt to scare them away without success. Their efforts attract Beetlejuice, a rambunctious spirit whose "help" quickly becomes dangerous for the Maitlands and innocent Lydia. The movie ends with the Deetzes and Maitlands living in harmony with the hit song 'Day-O' playing.
  4. The Addams Family (1991)- snap snap. Whenever the tune for this movie comes on, you cannot help but snap along with it. The movie starts of when a man claiming to be Fester, the missing brother of Gomez Addams, arrives at the Addams' home, the family is thrilled. However, Morticia begins to suspect the man is a fraud, since he cannot recall details of Fester's life. With the help of lawyer Tully Alford, Fester manages to get the Addams clan evicted from their home. Gomez realizes the two men are conspiring to swindle the Addams fortune and that he must challenge Fester.
  5. Halloweentown (1998)-This is one of the first Halloween movies that I ever got to watch on Disney Channel (back in the good ole' days!). I was so excited when it spurred three sequels. The sow is set on Halloween, while Marnie is arguing with her mother Gwen, the kids' grandmother Aggie comes to visit. Aggie wants to start Marnie's witch training before her 13th birthday or Marnie will lose her powers forever. But there is another reason for Aggie's visit. Something dark & evil is growing in Halloweentown & Aggie wants help to defeat it. While Aggie & Gwen are arguing, Aggie uses magic which Marnie observes. After Aggie leaves to return to Halloweentown, Marnie, Dylan and, unknown to Marnie and Dylan, Sophie follow her onto the return bus. Soon afterwards, Gwen follows the children to Halloweentown. While there, Aggie & Gwen are attacked by the dark force in a movie theater. Marnie, Dylan & Sophie race to get the ingredients to activate Merlin's Wand to stop the evil.
  6. Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)- Another classic. Seriously, if you don’t start doing the Time Warp dance at any point of the month of October, then something is wrong with you. I love when October rolls around because not only does this movie play constantly, but a local theatre in Corpus performs it throughout the month. It is a huge affair that never fails to bring a smile to my face. In this cult classic, sweethearts Brad and Janet, stuck with a flat tire during a storm, discover the eerie mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite scientist. As their innocence is lost, Brad and Janet meet a houseful of wild characters, including a rocking biker and a creepy butler. Through elaborate dances and rock songs, Frank-N-Furter unveils his latest creation: a muscular man named "Rocky."
  7. Tower of Terror (1993)-One of the ultimate DCOM movies that aired very early on. It is about a journalist and his helpers who investigate a 1939 mystery in which five people vanished from a hotel elevator on Halloween. Probably one of the better originals although it does seem to take on a Twilight Zone and Phantom of the Opera feel a little bit. Still one of the top 10.

The final three I turned to Kaci of Earth to Kace for actual scary movies as I am not someone who can do them. These are her three suggestions for all you ghouls and ghosts who love a good jump-scare.
  1. Silence of the Lambs (1991)-Book turned movie in which Jodie Foster stars as Clarice Starling, a top student at the FBI's training academy. Jack Crawford wants Clarice to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a brilliant psychiatrist who is also a violent psychopath, serving life behind bars for various acts of murder and cannibalism. Crawford believes that Lecter may have insight into a case and that Starling, as an attractive young woman, may be just the bait to draw him out.
  2. Blair Witch Project (1999)-Found video footage tells the tale of three film students (Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, Michael C. Williams) who've traveled to a small town to collect documentary footage about the Blair Witch, a legendary local murderer. Over the course of several days, the students interview townspeople and gather clues to support the tale's veracity. But the project takes a frightening turn when the students lose their way in the woods and begin hearing horrific noises.
  3. Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)-In Wes Craven's classic slasher film, several Midwestern teenagers fall prey to Freddy Krueger, a disfigured midnight mangler who preys on the teenagers in their dreams -- which, in turn, kills them in reality. After investigating the phenomenon, Nancy  begins to suspect that a dark secret kept by her and her friends' parents may be the key to unraveling the mystery, but can Nancy and her boyfriend Glen solve the puzzle before it's too late? Apparently Johnny Depp is in this one... Still could not pay me to watch it.

Well there you have it! My top 10 Halloween movies to watch! Seriously, the best thing about October is that you can lounge around on the weekends after you finish decorating and watch movies all day.
     Until next time,
